'Ugly' schoolgirl wins modelling contract

Unknown | 11:53 PM | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

Bullied by schoolmates and suffering from low self-esteem, 14-year-old Ellie Burton had the last laugh.

UK - Bullied by schoolmates over her looks and suffering from low self-esteem, 14-year-old Ellie Burton had the last laugh eventually.

The teenager was signed up by a modelling agency and cast in an ad campaign for retailer Marks & Spencer, featuring in billboards across the country.

She was persuaded to take up modelling by her mother after a group of cruel school bullies left her with low self-esteem.

"What the bullies said was really hurtful,"said Burton, who was taunted by bullies who made her feel ugly.

The abuse was so bad that she had to move schools and the bullies' cruel jokes left her unhappy.

"My friends scream with excitement when they see me but then the next day everything goes back to normal.

"I don't know what is next for me because modelling can be up and down. I hope someone will want me for another campaign."

EO6: A bitter lesson for the govt

Unknown | 11:36 PM | | | Best Blogger Tips

The Najib administration should now learn to respect the ‘rule of law’ instead of bending over backwards to fulfill its own hidden agendas

Abusing the Emergency Ordinance 1969, six breadwinners of their families’ were thrown behind bars and defamed with having waged a war against the King, holding subversive beliefs and instigating the rakyat to attend a rally which the police had deemed illegal.
Yesterday, 28 days later, all six were set free, unconditionally. The question that begs an answer from Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is: What happened in those 28 days’ that made him, his cousin the Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and the Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar realise that the six are innocent and should rightfully be released?
Or was it a case of all three parties being well aware of the innocence of the six but proceeded to used them as scapegoats, hoping to teach Malaysians in general a lesson for taking to the streets on July 9, 2011 and challenging the ‘powers that be’?

Man pays high price for coming home late

Unknown | 10:25 PM | | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

BAD luck came in threes for a man who was shut out of his house for coming home late.

He was then mugged in a nearby park and accused of planning a robbery in the neighbourhood.

Following the chain of events, the 21-year-old victim was left bleeding with head and body injuries.

He also lost a motorcycle, cash, a gold chain and a handphone.

The total losses that the victim incurred was estimated to be about RM5,000, reported Harian Metro.

It all started when the man came home late from the movies on Sunday.

His parents refused to let him in, prompting him to wander off to a nearby park at Taman Seraya, Ampang, and call up a friend to accompany him till morning.

A group of six men then came along at 4am and asked what they were doing there.

The victim tried to explain that his parents had locked him out of the house but they did not believe him.

The men accused the victim and his friend of planning to break into a house.

One of them slapped him, causing his friend to flee in fright.

The man gripped the victim's hands and hit him with a metal chain while another person used a hard object to bash his head.

The victim later filed a police report at the Pandan Indah police station.

KUALA LUMPUR - A man threatened to post nude photos of his former girlfriend online after she broke up with him.

Student Phang K.M., 20, said the man assaulted her whenever she expressed dissatisfaction over their two-month relationship.
“After quarrelling, he would punch my arms, slap my face and even used cigarettes to burn my skin,” she said at a press conference held by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong yesterday.

Bersih hijacked by "other groups and individuals", says Johor Queen

Almost 3 weeks after the Bersih 2.0 rally, the debate over the event still continues with a key member of royal family saying today that the electoral reform movement "had in someway been hijacked" by other groups and individuals.
Johor Sultanah Raja Zarith Sofia Sultan Idris Shah, said though the original cause of Bersih rally was genuine, it had been taken over by others.
"They had in someway been hijacked by other groups and individuals... the original idea about general elections and the transparency of general elections were lost," she said.

For national security, Khairy defends keeping arms purchases top secret

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has declared support for a Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, but stressed last night that several areas needed to be excluded in the interest of national security, such as defence procurements.
He pointed out that “no country will disclose specifications” of their military hardware due to security concerns.

When BN MPs turn to Muhyiddin for extra funding, it bodes ill for Najib

Unknown | 9:34 PM | | | | | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

When it came out in the press that 100 Barisan Nasional MPs had gone to see Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for funding for their constituencies, there were many who wondered why didn't they approach Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is also BN chairman. Najib is also the Finance minister and the all-powerful UMNO president. So why not him, why Muhyiddin?
Some of Najib's supporters say if the request was made to him, it might be 'controversial' especially if he dishes out money to the Barisan Nasional MPs, he might be accused of using national money to fund BN campaigns. But surely, everyone knows this has been happening all the while, so why the sudden coyness?
Then there were those who claimed the Prime Minister was too busy finding ways to shore up the country's battered economy while keeping his political minders in UMNO happy. The nation’s coffers are drying up fast and income generation is slow and lagging behind other countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia. And as the US wrangles with its own debt problems, analyst expect the ripples from this fiasco to hit world economies hard. So Najib has no time for BN MPs. Does that make sense?

Samad Said: Hound the PM wherever he goes

Unknown | 8:10 PM | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

National laureate A Samad Said has called on Malaysian youths to keep hounding prime minister Najib Razak to push forward Bersih's eight demands of electoral reforms.

Reacting to the arrest of ten people who tried to hand over a memorandum to Najib at the KL Sentral station yesterday, Pak Samad
also urged Najib not to fear engaging with the people, syaing he would otherwise risk another wave of protests.

A citizen's nightmare: Najib slammed for Utusan's 'Christian tweet' row

Unknown | 8:05 PM | | | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

A social networking tweet meant for friends has turned into a seditious act, a nightmare come true for Malaysians whose fundamental constitutional right of freedom of speech is often curtailed by Prime Minister Najib Razak's increasingly hardline government.
Normal Malaysians are trying to come to terms with what is happening in the country, where it is now forbidden for wear a T-shirt with the word Bersih or even just the colour yellow, depending on the occassion. To the outside world, this may seem ludicrous but there is a long list of 'No-Nos' and the latest to join the banned list is 'tweet'. Yes, Twitter's tweet.

M'sians see end of the road for Najib, but fear 'racial' Muhyiddin

Unknown | 7:55 PM | | | | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

Talk of Prime Minister Najib Razak faltering is buzzing all round the coffee-shops that dot the nation, with all eyes wide open to catch a glimpse of who will succeeed him.
The feelings for Prime Minister Najib Razak are mixed. There were some people who believed that Najib should continue as president of UMNO while many more see his career as "finished".
It is surprising to see that a hawker, a lecturer, a lawyer, a teacher and an IT analysis shared the same idea that Najib has to go, while a Malay professional and a BN leader think Najib is still the best man amongst the lot to continue as UMNO president and PM of Malaysia.

Jeyakumar and 5 other PSM leaders freed: Police must apologize

Unknown | 9:28 PM | | | | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

The EO-6 have finally been released after 28 days of detention following strenuous efforts by Parti Sosialis Malaysia members, NGOs and friends including Pakatan Rakyat supporters to pressure the police and Home Ministry to free them.
No reasons were given and the Star reported the Inspector General of Police as saying it is up to the Attorney-General to decide on the next course of action.
"Yes, it is confirmed. We need to get rid of all the oppressive laws, EO, ISA, OSA and PPPA because this case has highlighted how they can be abused. But before that, the BN government and the police must apologise to the EO-6 and their families," PKR legal affairs director Latheefa Koya told Malaysia Chronicle.

This is how the BN distorts human rights in Malaysia

Unknown | 9:24 PM | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

In 2005 the Human Rights Watch interviewed S Arutchelvan from Suaram, and he best described the difference between Internal Security Act and Emergency Ordinance as, “The ISA is top down - a government minister orders detention of someone seen as a threat to the government - whereas the EO is bottom up. The police, having failed to collect evidence to prosecute a criminal suspect, request an EO detention order from the minister.”
The Emergency Ordinance violates international law in many ways. It violates the fundamental right to liberty, right to due process, and a fair trial. Even in states of emergency, human rights standards still prohibit indefinite detention without charge or trial.

RM24mil ring: Denial or cover up? Rosmah says "nothing I want to say"

Unknown | 9:15 PM | | | | Best Blogger Tips

At last, Rosmah Mansor, the controversial wife of Prime Minister Najib Razak has deigned to break her silence on a RM24.4 million diamond ring she purportedly bought from an exclusive New York jewellery chain, Jacob & Co.
But while the UMNO press rushed to report her comments as a denial, Pakatan Rakyat leaders point out that she never actually said she did NOT import the ring or did NOT buy the ring, nor was she NOT connected in anyway with the ring.
In fact, her words were "there is nothing I want to say because I have no time to address such things. Let (the blogger) say what he wants."

In the Jews, Najib and Rosmah look to pin fallout from RM24mil ring?

Unknown | 9:02 PM | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

As anticipated, a massive clean-up has begun for Prime Minister Najib Razak, starting with his wife Rosmah Mansor and her alleged RM24.4 million diamond ring. The main purpose - to defend his very shaky UMNO presidency ahead of party polls due next year.
Although the country is also headed for snap elections widely expected to be held in October or November 2011, Najib appears more concerned about his personal power as more leaders from both within UMNO and BN turn to his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin for guidance after a series of governance and political blunders by his administration.
Meanwhile, pundits expressed disappointment that Najib would again revert to Jew-bashing in a bid to get Rosmah and himself off the hook. Although news of the garagantuan diamond ring had shocked everyday Malaysians, not many have doubts that the first couple had more than enough money to make such a purchase, which in US terms is worth $8 million.

Woman's $ 1 mil luxury car crash

Unknown | 12:56 AM | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

This is the moment a blundering blonde caused the world's most expensive five-car pile-up — when her Bentley collided with a Mercedes, a Ferrari, a Porsche and an Aston Martin.

Hundreds of tourists watched in shock as the woman ploughed her £250,000 Bentley Azure into the supercars in Monaco.

The driver of a white Mercedes S Class worth £75,000 was the first victim as the 2.7-ton convertible scraped down the side of it before crashing into a £140,000 black Ferrari F430.

An Aston Martin Rapide worth £140,000 and an £80,000 Porsche 911 also both suffered heavy damage after being shunted in the bizarre smash.

The driver and her two passengers then had the humiliation of being surrounded by scores of sightseers as they tried to open the car's jammed doors.

It is estimated the crash will cost more than £40,000 with the Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin requiring new front wings and bumpers, while the Bentley needs the same repairs PLUS a new door.

Ruud Poot, editor of European motoring website Autogespot, said: "You probably couldn't find a worse place in the world to crash your car than outside Monaco's Place du Casino in the middle of the summer."

A miracle happened on July 9, 2011

Unknown | 12:31 AM | | | | Best Blogger Tips

My foray into rallies and protest marches started during the hey days of the 'Reformasi' Movement in the late nineties. However my first big march was the Bersih 1.0 rally, in November 2007, which drew around 40,000 people. The rally was marred by the police and I was caught in a crossfire of tear gas canisters near Masjid Jamek. I managed to retreat and joined the crowd in our march to Istana Negara to hand a memorandum to the King. Hindraf organised a march later that month and subsequently, in the 2008 general election, the BN lost its largest share of votes since 1957.
Like many others who had written so many heartwarming stories of their experiences of Bersih 2.0, I too had many misgivings on the eve of the march. The unbelievable campaign of terror, fear and intimidation by the government and extremist groups like PERKASA was enough to scare anyone from even thinking of participating.
However the Organising Committee of Bersih 2.0 and organisations like Lawyers for Liberty, SUHAKAM and other NGOs convinced me that the right to peaceful protest is enshrined in the Malaysian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and numerous other international human rights instruments. I told myself that no PM, IGP or Home Minister can decree otherwise and deny our right to peaceful assembly.

He said the detention of the six has continued to receive local and international condemnation and this is the first time a Member of Parliament has been detained under the EO.

Teen survives having sword stuck in head

A CHINESE teenager has miraculously survived after a gruesome accident in which a sword was embedded in his head.

The blade ended up 5cm into Zhang Bin's forehead after he and a group of friends started playing with the weapon, reported The Sun.

The 15-year-old had to wait four hours before receiving treatment after the first hospital he was rushed to was reportedly unable to treat the injury.

Zhang was then driven to another hospital 400km away in Changsha, Hunan Province.

"Three classmates came to visit me at home and one of them brought a sword," the teen said of the accident.

"He stood 3-4m away from me. I don't know how the sword flew at me and stabbed into my head."

After four hours of surgery Zhang was expected to make a full recovery.

Jeyakumar goes on hunger strike, slams police and govt inaction

Sungai Siput MP Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj will begin a hunger strike on Thursday until he and five others detained under the Emergency Ordinance are released or are brought to court to be charged.
The EO is an oppressive law that allows the government the right to imprison victims without trial for indefinite periods of time, often years. In the runup to the July 9, Jeyakumar and 5 other PSM members were arrested for rekindling Communism and waging war against the King.

The Attorney-General's Chambers today confirmed that it has received investigation papers (IPs) on several opposition leaders and Bersih 2.0 leaders from the police to look into the possibility of charging them for their involvement in the July 9 rally calling for electoral reform.

Kuala Lumpur prosecution head Raja Rozela Raja Toran, when contacted, also confirmed the list includes opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Batu MP Tian Chua and Bersih 2.0 chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Najib, Liow caught in a lie: Children demand explanation

Election promises made by the Barisan Nasional are often not kept, but for two siblings, they will never forget the broken promises made by Prime Minister Najib Razak and Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai,’which contributed to the death of their father. And both siblings want answers from the PM and Liow.
Tan Chong Chern and his sister, Tiney Tan from Sri Aman told reporters today that during the State election, both Najib and Liow went to Sri Aman and assured the people there that they would have a new hospital, two specialists, an ambulance (the present one is a van converted into an ambulance) and more medical staff. The BN candidate for Simanggan, Sri Aman, Dr Francis Hardin Hollis won the election.
That was three months ago, and today, nothing much has changed at the Sri Aman hospital where their father breathed his last.

Teach us to fish, don't give us the fish

Unknown | 11:59 PM | | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

John Malott, a former US ambassador to Malaysia, in his article Malaysia’s Political Awakening: A Call for US Leadership has brought to the attention of law-makers in America, the plight of democracy in Malaysia. It is a call for the US leadership to pay more attention and be more vocal during a time when Prime Minister Najib Razak's government seems to be reneging on democratic practises.
In an interview with Malaysia Chronicle, Malott had explained what he meant by "US leadership" and stressed that US concerns did not lie in who formed the government of Malaysia but about the continuation of and support for democracy in the Southeast Asian nation.
"I called for US leadership. By that I mean, we need to be more visible and vocal in expressing our concerns about developments in Malaysia. We need to be more supportive – moral support and encouragement - of those members of civil society in Malaysia who want Malaysia to become a true democracy and have the same freedom that we and others have. We should support the call for electoral reform. It is not up to America who forms the government in Malaysia. But we should be concerned whether the playing field is level," Malott had said.

Man who drugged, raped and video-taped 4 girls

Unknown | 11:31 PM | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

RED HILL — During what prosecutors described as “monstrous” acts, a Schwenksville area man allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted four little girls and videotaped the acts which he called “sleep assaults” to share with others on the Internet.

“This is one of the most disgusting, most egregious cases of sexual crimes that I have ever prosecuted,” said veteran Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Samantha Cauffman, who leads the district attorney’s sex crimes unit.
“It’s bad enough to sexually abuse a child. But to incapacitate them to enable the abuse and then to brag about it and send pictures of it across the Internet, those are monstrous actions. They’re hard to comprehend.”

The ghosts of Mahathirism

Unknown | 1:47 AM | | Best Blogger Tips

Najib has failed the leadership test in his handling of Bersih 2.0.

Is Mahathirism back with a vengeance?
Recent events do make it seem like the Najib regime has decided to adopt the former prime minister’s authoritarian style in saving its flagging political fortunes. It has resorted to using draconian laws and shameless propaganda in the face of an awakening electorate and increasing exposures of its misdeeds.
The government seems to have ignored the strong signal given by the 2008 election result that Malaysians want more democratic space. And what was Bersih 2.0’s July 9 rally if not a reaffirmation of that demand?
But instead of using the occasion to promote his much-vaunted liberalist image, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak seemed to have done what Dr Mahathir Mohamad would have done—crush them and damn what the world says.
