KANGAR - All she wanted to do was offer support to her 37-year-old husband, who was to be sentenced for a drug-related offence.

However, Shahidawati Shabudin, 37, ended up going into labour and delivered a baby boy with the help of a cleaner, court employees, policewomen and members of the public.

The heart-wrenching scene happened at the open space of the court complex here at 10am.

Sessions Court registrar Monica Joseph Gaisah said a former court cleaner noticed Shahidawati, who was on a bench outside the magistrate's courtroom, crying out in pain.

"The cleaner approached Shahidawati and was shocked to see that the baby's head was half out.

"She immediately called for help and several court employees and policewomen on duty rushed to her aid," she said, adding that a few members of the public then formed a circle around the assisting women as they helped Shahidawati deliver the baby.

The baby boy was delivered at 10.45am before mother and son were rushed to Hospital Tuanku Fauziah here by ambulance.

Monica said the state courts intended to take the newborn as a foster child.

"This incident is historic as the baby was the first to be delivered in the Kangar court complex."

Monica said the accused, Norizam Saad, 39, burst out in tears when he saw his wife in labour with the couple's fourth child.

"I advised him to repent and change his ways.

"I told him that he should be thinking of his wife and children."

Monica added that Norizam had promised not to dabble in drugs any more and agreed to her suggestion of naming the newborn Muhammad Ariff Hakim.
